Drive: Film Technique analysis Drive is one among the most creative and designed movies designed for the present world. It focuses on driving and this picture of roaring the engine is vivid from the start to the finish of the film. It was first released in the year 2011. “It starts with an opening gateway scenario that marked the most interesting driving episode in the cinema.” (Ryan) The first few minute reveal a real riding hell tour. This movie is more enthusiastic than the unrestrained set because it hits the throttles within a span of 100 minutes. Drive is a good movie that brings back the memories of Bullitt. A 1968 film by Steve McQueen, that was rated to be the best. One of the actors in the movie is Ryan Gosling. He has no clear appreciation until he performs in Blue valentine. He became dominant in comedic works especially in Stupid Love. In the last series of his films, it is evident that he can deliver the goods in comedy and give a dramatic performance. He takes a new formula in Drive that is contrary to his initial acting of comedy; an action star. Gosling does a perfect job in creating violence to give a taste to the movie. Despite his initial poor performances, Drive gives Gosling a step up to performances worth of Oscar awards. Goslings is more intriguing and mysterious through his character in the movie. In this movie, the main character is not known by a nickname but he occupies the film name hence Driver. This name goes in line with the title and gives direct meaning to the expectation in the movie. The audiences are move to know how stiff and serious the driver in the film is. Drivers character is the creation of curiosity, which may drive the audience to inquire who he is. The approach is best for developing the character of actors and keep secrecy of all intentions in relation to past happenings. The character must resemble the actor in order to unpredictability in every action and line as depicted in Drive. The Drive movie is not full of dialogue in the scripts, but most of its scenes are filled with silence. The silence sets the mood of every scene in a different perspective. Silence is a technique that was used in the movie known as the boy in the Stripped Pajamas, where scenes that have no background music are colder and much tenser. In the scenes where silence is used, the conversations between characters become awkward at times, but they have a reality feel. In the silence scenes, dialogues are simple but awkward in a way similar to a conversation in reality. They do not need to have cheesy lines to bring down the script. The scenes that have background music playing, however, the use of awkward and simple dialogue is not frequent. The movie also has original soundtrack to give it natural taste in the scenes that are not silent. The film does not feature common tunes in the film industry, but the use of different sounds makes Drive have an original taste as a movie. Nicholas Winding Refn is the director of the film. He is a fast thinker with Drive. He uses many imaginative techniques in his acting. The imaginative technique in not frequently used in most films. The most fascinating aspect of the movie is that of taking the camera behind the wheel and providing the audience with a scenario that gives a feeling of what driving in the car with a driver is like in the actual sense. The movie uses this technique in different scenes for eight times. The film gives the driver’s point of view in the vehicle, thereby giving excellent night shots of Los Angeles. Refn also uses lighting technique to give Drive a great sensational look. The lighting on the movie is very remarkable and is at the highest perfection point in every scene. This is seen through the revelation of shining lights of Los Angeles’ beauty as depicted in Driver’s windshield that is moonlighted off. This is just but one among very dazzling scenes caused by the lighting technique as used in the film. Refn uses this technique greatly in the cinematography that gives the film an outstanding creativity. The technique helps in attracting and maintains the attraction of the audience all through the play. The Drive also uses the elevator scene. This scene is best in developing excitement that is anticipated in the film. The scene has good shooting and a quality soundtrack that is remarkable and considered best among all the original tracks. It creates the most intense of the scenes of the entire film. This scene creates a charged reaction to the audience in the theatre. It touches to the expected feeling of the audience and move them to feel part of the action. Drive has scenes that have bloody brutality. The action scenes are crafted on visual points and sequential. For simplicity, the element of surprise is used perfectly well in the film. The film is crafted in a way that one cannot know what is expected in the consecutive scene. The use of silent technique in almost all the scenes gives the movie the one-hundred percent unpredictability and is excellent. Some characters are difficult to understand while watching the film, but they form part of the entire performance that is amazing. There is an irresistible cast about Carrey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go) that is depicted in Drive. Carrey Mulligan reveals an electric and fascinating performance. This great performance is highly associated with his previous acting. Albert brook also shows excellent performance getting back in the game and creating high-five standard performance. Ron Perlman also reveals quality performance by giving a number of silly, but special lines to heart out in his voice. He also recreates surprises when he did the contrary to being the films biggest dent in the hood as expected by the audience. In this film, driver asks one of the characters “ever hear the story of the scorpion and the Frog?” there is a change in the topic just after the question. This scene is very interesting as it leaves the viewers in suspense. It is vital as audience, to understand the meaning of these words in the film context. Knowing the story of the Scorpion and the frog before hand is essential to connect it to the film to reveal extensive meaning to it. The scorpion and the Frog story is a parable about a Scorpion who asked the frog to carry him on his back across the river. The frog was afraid of being stung amidst the trip while the scorpion argues that His sting to the Frog during the journey would mean both of them would drown. After a deep thought, the Frog agrees to carry the Scorpion but just midway across the river, the unexpected happens and the Scorpion stings the Frog. They are both doomed, but when scorpion is asked for reasons as to his action, it says it is natural for it to sting. This answer entails that the scorpion has this reaction in nature. Do things without a thought or instantly and could not have any other way except that. Connecting the scorpion and the frog story to the film, it is evident by the symbolic picture of Scorpion in driver’s jacket. The sequence of the tale in the story is similar and symbolic to that which happens in the film after statement. This gives brilliance to the film. A number of activities in the film also give the technique of symbolism. Betty, one of the actors in the film does not interact with most of the performers but suffices to give an image of Diane’s mind. She gives an image of a mind filled with other important personas like illegitimate and legitimate Hollywood powerbrokers, few actors, two movie directors and female mystics among others. Most of the actors she interacts with as she immensely. Her emergence as an innocent character influences Rita’s persona and is not eliminated in Diane’s mind. The existence of the women and their participation points gives the film an image similar to “lament for then Angles." This is depicted by the ode of the lives of young women whose lives are crushed in the pursuit of a career of Hollywood. This is made clear by the connection of the female protagonist in the film who is associated with other women whose life destiny ends without achieving their desired dreams. The film uses cinematography that is similar to watching a film stage event. The film is amazing in the way it associates shots from outside the theatre on a soundstage. It gives the replica of a real Shubert in the natural scene. The involvement of common scenarios helps the audience to connect the actions in the film to daily life and get the true natural picture in the film. Drive involves the audience into the film thereby owning the film thus making it very interesting and un-interruptible once the scenes unfold. Proxemics is also identical in the film. The film reveals the use of intimate distance especially in the scenes where driver gets into the wheel. This creates a physical movement of individuals in terms of love, tenderness and comfort. The actions in the film reveal personal distances where the actors tend to reserve for friends and acquaintances in aim of personal advantages. Social distances are known to be lengthy and can be revealed in the many casual gatherings, it is also viewed in friendly conversations to depict a formal relation. It is not friendly distance in various cases. Public distance is common to many films and Drive is no exception. This distance gives s a formal and detached image to the audience. It creates a mood of suspicion and is always accompanied by clashing reactions that bring a taste to the film. Drive has the involvement of all the Proxemics in connection to soundstage and silence to give the original taste to the film. The final moments of the movie leaves a lot of questions to the audience. This is due to an amount of ambiguity over the driver’s fate. The intention of the movie maker on creating ambiguity in the end is to create an open ending. This is to cause thought in the minds of the audience and keep them talking about the film. The ambiguity ending in Drive is believed to help find the right balance. This leaves room for more adventures in case there need be to advance the movie. The weight of the ambiguity ending is brought about through the creation of lingering doubts about the figurativeness and literalness of what the audiences are seeing. Drive emerges as an excellent film. It has very many different techniques and aspects used in the creating of the film that most of the films that were produced. It contains most of the original pieces ever identified in films. It is also driven with power and performances that have the intensity. The combination of relevant ideas into practical scenes provides a vivid and spurning image to behold. The speed of action and swift thinking and reactions provides a latest technological perception to the film. It is a real drive for the audience.
