This paper is intended to focus on the analysis of the growth of the telecommunications sector and the changes due to data revolution that have helped in realizing the potential, however, it is imperative to note here that a majority of the previous researchers have primarily focused on the historical development of telecom in India, the players in the market, the role of telecommunication and regulatory authorities in India. During the process of research, it has been analyzed that a sizeable amount of literature on the telecommunication industry does not talk about the competition that exists in the market, how it influences the population and their choices when choosing a network service provider and how has data revolution brought about a change in the way this sector is going to shape in the next decade.

Kumar (2017) notes that the Indian telecom sector has evolved rapidly since the onset of the late 1990s. The government has been instrumental in launching the New Economic Policy, which opened gates to the private sector to enter the Indian domain. Not only this, the National telecom policy passed in the year 1994 acted as a catalyst for this sector’s growth in terms of provision of services at affordable rates, encouragement of exports, and a significant influx of foreign investments in the economyBorah (2017) emphasizes that with the relaxation of policies concerning entry, it became imperative to regulate the private players in the market.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India was a result of such a necessity and therefore, in the year 1997, TRAI was established. With the implementation of the policies by TRAI on a timely basis, the telecom market transformed from a monopolistic, government-owned sector to a multi-player and open market with regularized competition policies. She further that post the establishment of TRAI, the National Telecom Policy formulated in the year 1999 paved the way for future growth and reforms of all the sectors in the telecommunication industry by making it accessible to various private players.

The road to the development of the telecommunication sector since then has been a smooth one.
