Whether The Arrivals Of Immigrants To Australia Have Been Detrimental Or Beneficial To Australian? Table of Contents Introduction 2 The Existing Literature 3 Methods 6 Discourse Analysis 6 In-Depth Interview 7 Group Discussion 8 The Question’s Importance 8 Conclusion 10 References 11 Bibliography 13 Introduction The migration in a country can have both positive and negative impacts on the development of a country. As referring to the context, it can be stated that in every country there are migrants but the rate of migration differs from one economic region to another. For instance, the development of educational affair in Australia influenced immigrants from various countries including India, China and others. In the present scenario, it has been stated that the growth rate of migration in Australia are respectively more than other countries. The major growth in the migration rate consecutively resulted in a rapid augmentation of population in West Australia (Living in Australia, 2012). The objective of the paper is to discuss the effect witnessed by Australia owing to its increasing immigration rate. Aimed to identify the virtues and the drawbacks of migration with strong affects on the economic stance of Australia, three methods are intended to be implemented in this discussion. The methods are discourse analysis, in depth interview and group discussion. The Existing Literature Immigration refers to the act when a person from his/her birthplace i.e. home country attempts to settle in another country for the purpose of education or employment or any other similar reasons. With this regards, Rowthorn (2004) has stated that the study of immigration is a difficult process. However, through the article, the author was able to conclude that it is generally advantageous to welcome immigrants to the country so that the birth rate can be controlled along with encouraging equality in terms of wealth distribution. It is in this context that economic conditions of the host country can be witnessed as developing nature with the entrance of immigrants as they are charged with higher taxes than the locale population (Rowthorn, 2004). Considering the example of Gypsies as the migrating population connecting its roots to no particular nation having different languages and culture, Armillei (2011) had initiated to develop an understanding regarding the pros and the cons of migration. The authors revealed that Gypsies’ culture and different languages create a misunderstanding in the economic environment for the host country encouraging the distinct dimensions of culture as well as economic hierarchy. Even though, this raises the heritage of the socio-cultural significance of the country, it is quite likely that the social institutions of the economy will have to face major conflicts in developing innovative systems and controlling such vibrant dimensions (Armillei, 2011). On the contrary, the positive impact of the immigration indicates a sustainable development of the host country in various dimensions relating to the prevailing economical conditions, growth of educational facilities and the social cultures. The most beneficiary aspect of immigration for the host country is often regarded as the expansion of the economy. It is in this context that with an increasing migration from various countries, the versatility within the economy is likely to grow which in turn would assist it to pursue better opportunities for development and growth (Katseli & et. al., 2006). To be mentioned, entry of immigrants in Australia was observed to have a positive response in developing the economic condition of Australia with respect to culture diversity and availability of skilled labor (Rowthorn, 2004). the negative impact of migration indicates a slower working process and complexities from a generalized point of view, as in most instances the immigrants do not have requisite educational knowledge or competitive working skills. Hence, the involvement of skilled and unskilled labors in the work force gives rise to conflicts and disorders in respect to job responsibilities and wage structures (Dustmann & et. al. 2003). Even though a country needs to witness such limitations owing to the migration rates, Rowthorn (2004) theory states that immigration helps its host country to develop its economic conditions rendering due significance towards the case of Australia. The author in this context notified that because of the lack of skilled workers in Australia, the government was highly inclined towards attracting larger population of migrants from other countries with skilled labor force which deliberately increased the migration rate within the economy. Immigration further helped Australia to develop its economic status in the world economy with sustainable wealth distribution and increase in the income per capita ratio. Armillei (2011) further noted that the diverse culture can also be virtuous for a country in relation to social aspects. As a result, in the present scenario, Australia is often regarded as the most varied country in terms of its culture as compared with the international platform where the educational sector was also developed with the involvement of diverse culture (Rowthorn, 2004). Methods Research methods are widely considered to be the backbone of any research study. It tends to provide a proper structure to the process which in turn assists greatly in the ultimate achievement of the determined research objectives. In this study, three methods are being implemented to give an effective explanation for the determined research question, i.e. ‘Whether the arrival of immigrants to Australia has been detrimental or beneficial to Australian?’ The three methods are Discourse Analysis, In-depth Interview and Group Discussion. Discourse Analysis Discourse analysis is used in research methods which fundamentally involve a debatable topic. Discourse analysis helps to apply appropriate language concerning the events preferred by the mass. In other words, discourse analysis can be defined as scrupulous way of understanding the ongoing phenomenon with two contradictory viewpoints (Jorgensen & Phillips, 2002). Based on a similar notion, discourse analysis is being used in this paper to understand the consequences led by immigration in Australian economy. It is in this context that discourse analysis is expected to assist the research in specifying the fundamental requirements of the study. Specifying the requirements of research concerning the immigration rate will help to collect the exact information required to substantiate the determined research objectives. It has been earlier observed that the Australian culture has developed as a vibrant one, with varied dimensions in terms of its languages and communicative modes. Thus, the application of discourse analysis will not only assist in recognizing the variations within the cultural prospects of Australia with due attention towards speech acts and conversations, but shall also lead towards a developed understanding of the community which at large is expected to be advantageous in revealing the social effects caused by migration within the economy. It is worth mentioning that the implementation of discourse analysis will help to avoid conflicts with relation to the ethical concerns preserving transparency. In-Depth Interview Interview can be defined as the process of interacting with people related to various issues. Interview method can be implemented for this research as it can serve with adequate information concerning the research objectives through individual perspectives. The implementation of in-depth interview in this research is proposed to consider 50 respondents (or interviewees) from various dimensions of the Australian business environment to obtain adequate information regarding the economic impact of migration. The advantage of this method is to provide with elaborately explained information than other sources like survey. However, it should be considered in this regard that the in-depth interview should be planned effectively before its presentation preserving adequate transparency, so that the objective of research is clear to the interviewees motivating them for greater participation (Boyce, 2006). Group Discussion Group discussion can be stated as the process where more than one participant interacts with each other on a specific issue with a fundamental aim to obtain a rational conclusion through debate. Hence, this method of interacting is observed to largely contribute towards obtaining relevant information on a particular issue. This method can be conducted at that time when researcher has less or limited idea on their research problem. The advantages of group discussion can be identified as it assists in the collection of unbiased and appropriate opinion for the research purpose taking into account, both negative as well as positive aspects. However, if one of the major disadvantages of group discussion is that the information collected by this mode does not include quantitative information (The Health Communication Unit, 2000). Considering these aspects, group discussion method in research would be conducted with the high officials who have proper information about the immigration. The Question’s Importance The most apparent importance of this question is its focus on identifying and evaluating the advantages as well as the disadvantages of immigration in Australia. The determined question is based on the ideology that entry of immigrants in Australia leads to several advantages for the economy at large. Major advantages of migration have been observed as the development of Australia in several dimensions including the business environment, infrastructural development scenario as well as import and export trends. Researchers have often connoted that the economic condition prevailing within Australia has developed rapidly due to the entry of immigrants, especially in the current century (Katseli & et. al., 2006). With the increasing rate of immigration, the labor scarcities within Australia have also been observed as settled by a considerable extent. Referring to the context, it can be stated that the involvement of immigrants in the workforce helped Australia to develop its infrastructure as well as business environment with a gradual development in its production level. Migration also helped the economy to expand its diversity in terms of culture, which deliberately made Australia to emerge as one of the most distinct countries in the world. The economic condition of Australia is also recorded to enhance steadily owing to the virtues of migration which assisted the economy to promote the global market within its economic structure (The World Bank, 2012). Along with the positive aspects, the research question also intends to justify the negative influences caused by the migration rate within Australia. With this intention, the research question is proposed to take into account the dimensions of socio-cultural (through discourse analysis) and economic (through in-depth interviews) followed by a rigorous and rational debate (through group discussion) which in turn is expected to reveal noteworthy unbiased findings for the research. Conclusion Immigration is an influencing part of development for the country as well as the world. With the entry of immigrants, it has been observed that the economic conditions prevailing within the host country has increased rapidly which is likely to have both positive and negative effects. However, referring to the existing literatures, it has been observed that the growth of the immigrants in Australia depicted a positive measure. In the proposed research, the research process will be implemented by utilizing three methods, i.e. discourse analysis, in-depth interview and group discussion. Contextually, it is worth mentioning that the research process proposed in this regard can give rise to limitations in terms of complexities. References Armillei, R., 2011.
