Concepts in psychology applied to my career path Concepts in psychology applied to my career path Psychology may be a that seems to be unrelated to my major which is Management Information System but studying the subject can prove to be beneficial to my career path. There are concepts in psychology that could be useful in my field and could even help me to advance in achieving my career goals. Concepts such as Psychology as a Hub Science, Functional psychology and Freud and his psychodynamic theory are not theories that are not only beneficial to the profession of psychology but also to other profession as well. The concept of Psychology as a Hub Science posits that psychology is about people. As a field of study, it seeks to understand people and their behavior. The use of understanding people and their behavior may differ from those who practice psychology to my field in Management Information System but nevertheless useful. Psychologists may need it to arrive at an effective intervention while in my field, understanding people and behavior allows me to better interact with people which could lead to better teamwork that will ultimately result to higher productivity and higher professional satisfaction. Better relationship with peers, fellow professionals and other people leads to a better quality of life free of stress due to the absence or effective handling of conflict. The application of psychology as a functional science is also beneficial in my field and probably the most applicable than the two other concepts of structuralists and Gestalt psychologists which resides mainly in the field of theory and discussion. Functionalism on the other focuses more on the understanding that behaviors are purposeful that is necessary for one’s survival. My field of study may not need an instinct for survival but having the understand of the purpose of behavior will help me understand myself and other making me a better professional with my job as relates to myself and other people. This kind of psychology differs from the typical practice and use of which is more into introspection to understand human behavior but rather also delves more into the practical use of psychology. This is very much useful in my career as a professional in Management Information System because while my major deals mainly with computers and systems, these computers and systems serves the need of people which are its end users. A better understanding of its end users, the people will put me in a better position to design systems that are more responsive to the needs of its end users. This will in effect, put in more human understanding to the seemingly inanimate dimension of computers to make it more intuitive to the use of people and in a way, understands its users more. Having this better understanding of people that is translated into computers on how they better react to people is in effect doing my job well and even better than others. This serves me well not only in a manner that will allow me to better interact with people but also in the technical aspect of my job. Freud’s psychodynamic theory is also of a particular interest to me in psychology. My interest lies not in the discussion of Freud’s psychoanalysis or his pathway to symptom formation but rather on the application of such understanding of the unconscious mind, the development of sexuality, dream analysis, and psychological roots of abnormal behavior. Understanding the unconscious mind will make me understand the why of people’s motivation on why do they act the way they act. It would also make me better understand how powerful the unconscious is in determining the course of human behavior. Understanding the development of human sexuality and dream analysis will also make me better understand human nature as a whole. And in this holistic understanding will enable me to look at abnormal behaviors not in judgmental way but in an analytical way on how to best deal with them. In short, Freud and his psychodynamic theory will provide me a better perspective on how to better deal with abnormal and difficult people. Rather than completely dismissing or judging them, I would find better ways on how to deal with the behavior of people by understanding them. This skill of better handling abnormal behavior and difficult people is essential in my chosen career. While I specialize on systems and computers, my chosen career still serves and involves a great deal about people. And when it deals with people, conflict due to abnormal behavior and difficult people is inevitable. It is unavoidable and this perspective about psychodynamic theory will allow me how to better deal with difficult situation imbuing me better skills in conflict resolution. This skill is necessary when it is left unchecked or poorly dealt with, conflict can be counterproductive and can bog down an entire team or organization. Advancing my career would be difficult if I cannot deal with conflicts that will come my way. These concepts in psychology as Psychology as a Hub Science, Psychology as a functional science and Freud’s psychodynamic theory maybe theories and concepts frequently used in the field of Psychology but they are also useful in my chosen career in Management information System. These concepts are effective tools in understanding and dealing with people which fosters better understanding, greater teamwork and higher productivity while avoiding if not minimizing conflict at the same time producing greater satisfaction with our work and personal lives. End users will also find the product of my work intuitive, useful and friendly because its designer better understood its users who are people and fashioned the system and the machine to serve such understanding. Psychology as a Hub Science, Psychology as a functional science and Freud’s psychodynamic theory therefore is not only useful to psychologists but also to people who are involved in Management Information System. It is useful to my career path in the same manner that psychologists find computers which is my area of study to be useful also in doing their job well. Read More
