A woman’s place is in the home A statement that ‘woman’s place is in the home’ was not only a statement in the past but also a fact. However, this did not mean that women were illiterate; but their hobbies were more placed in home. These hobbies included sewing and playing the musical instruments, their roles included home building which was a bit far from the roles of their male counterparts. In past, families were even more stable, the women were tender hearted and even more docile. They knew it was their role to keep everything moving and well in their homes. On the other hand, man felt that the home was his palace and he was in rule of it according to Cokie (1998). Children expected their mothers to welcome them back home from their schools; they also shared experience about their schools with them. ‘Woman’s place is at home’ was in much application at the past, this is the time when the bond between the children and mothers was very strong as compared to nowadays. In past, women had a lot of influence on the life of their children. While at home, women were able to have a privilege of closely watching their sons’ and daughters’ bloom and blossom becoming fine young women and men. They had every opportunity to nurture their children with all means. These home women had time to teach their children on good values and the ways of maintaining discipline. This resulted to reduced cases of crime among the young people and the society in general. Home mothers were able to emphasize the need of maintaining the respect for authority among their children (Kira, 2002). Girls were also given advice and taught on the need to honor their husbands. There were also taught on how to maintain and even model good moral standards within the community. These home women in their own ways were leaders, they had their own rights as they were main pillars upon where families were built. During the era when ‘a woman’s place is in home’ was a norm, the society was less corrupt and less violent. However, this era of ‘a woman’s place is in home’ did not last for long. The second wave of feminism came out at around 1960’s. This made the structure of the family to decline considerably, women started to compete with men in all the occupations. Women started leaving their home building ways and instead started to penetrate into the career world like their fellow male counterparts. The issue of equal rights among the genders rose and became even more popular within the society. All this resulted to men treating women like their fellow men. Women go to an extent of seeking employment even outside their homes, they engage in multiple tasks. This mainly happens because when they leave employment and return home, they still perform those tasks that the mothers are expected to do. This usually results to stressful life or situations; this is because they have to share the little time remaining with their children and husbands. ‘A Woman’s Place Is in Home’ is a statement that is no longer in use today; it has been replaced by women who are now engaging in more economic activities. Modern women who are more concerned about their career than homes (Westover, 2003). Television does more harm than good International Debate Education Association’s website (2010) has details of that television plays a great role of being a tool of spreading the information as well as forming the mentality of the people. It also plays a great role in the political and social life. Television provides a means of entertaining individuals in their day to day life. It plays a great role in shaping the social changes as it affects the mind. To a great extent, it is said to be more harmful as television continues to show more violence and sex. This usually comes for the sake of commercial programs as they try to make them more and more good and of quality. Television sacrifices the program quality for commercial benefit sake; this takes the biggest part of the television time. Modern society without television is impossible to imagine about it, this is due to the vital role they play in spreading the information throughout the world. Television exposes children to the flashing lights, quick edits, scene changes and the auditory cuts that are over stimulating especially to the developing brains. Television has been seen to replace many activities that children used to engage in the past; Children do not play any longer or even interact with their parents. Exposing infants to television poses a potential risk to their life in future as it brings around some complications of behavior and other aspects. The harm of television does not only occur on children or teenagers, but it also occurs in adults as well. There has been a lot of evidence in western countries and U.S.A on the effects of the television. A lot of criminal have confessed that their attitudes and violent actions are encouraged by the television programs. Crime rates are growing day by day; they are being committed by teenagers due to the television results. Television has been attributed to antisocial behavior especially in western countries and United States (Janet & Albert, 2000). All-Free-Essays (2010) argue that, although televisions have been used for great commercial purposes, they have resulted to negative effects among people. As the advertisers try by all means to convince the audience that problem can be solved, this results to audience buying their products so as to fulfill their desire. This is usually to make viewers to blindly accept the products. This way, television affects human mind negatively due to the limits it gives towards the choice consciousness possibility hence promoting society. As most of the audiences of television are teenagers, they become very vulnerable to various stereotypes and even violence which is promote by television. This is due to the fact that the mentality of young people is in the formation process. There is need for the parents and the state to limit the television exposure; this is mainly to reduce the impact of television. This impact can affect negatively the future of the society hence need to control. Due to the fact that televisions are directed to the films with a lot of commercial purposes, there is very little contribution to our culture. Televisions are mass production temples with shallow values and even stereotypes which have very great influence to the modern society. This negative effect usually spread as television grows even more popular especially among children and young people. This effect causes the society to change even for the worse, this trivializes the culture and even making most of us conform to Hollywood model of entertainment. This leads to diversity and traditions being lost. As people prefer to spend most of their leisure time watching television, this reduces real life quality as it narrows the outlook of people. Television also limits the free time activities as well as reducing family relationships due to reduced conversation. Television goes to have an impact on the health of many people due to reduced exercises; this is because most people do not get time to do some exercise. Among the health problem likely to be caused by television is obesity, watching television is usually a passive hobby which increases the diabetes and obesity risks. Another great problem or harm caused by television is depression. It is a psychological problem in the modern society which in a way is caused by watching television. Television watching popularity is one major reason that results to depression. Crimes, violence, wars and aggression that are broadcasted in the daily news and also in movies usually encourage negative emotions, psychological tension and pessimism among those who watch those programs. Televisions are promoting many harmful programs like sexual activities, violence and drugs. They promote programs that are harmful rather than educating the youth and people in society. Common activity like violence is a major activity that is promoted by television through the game shows, movies and cartoons. It causes people to exactly the same way the actresses and actors in televisions do. This violence usually informs their audience to reveal their behavior to their friends, people in authority and families. The use of knives and guns is usually promoted by television and eventually it leads to violence (Philip, Douglas & Lawrence, 1989). Television promotes the sexual activities via the movies, cartoon and reality shows. There is need to give priority to the safety of the children as far as watching the television is concerned. Most of the cartoons shown contain or are based on sexual activities, therefore their need to control them especially on children before their future. The use and selling of drugs are also showed on the televisions in a view that, the drug barons thrive and survive by use of all tactics. This definitely promotes such behaviors among the youth. This usually encourages the teenagers who see these episodes; they think that selling and abusing the drugs can make them rich or even heroes. It has been noted that most parents allow their children to watch television programs on allegations that they are good for their brains. This is a great mistake and usually results to many of those children becoming influenced by those television programs. Infants are able to learn a lot from live presentations like televisions other than what they are taught, this leads them to do that they get to see in televisions. They do not mind whether it is good or bad to them. According to research that has been done, those children who watch television at their early years or at cognitive development stage usually performs poorly. Their memory and reading skills are reduced greatly hence they do not cope well with the academic life. Televisions were meant to educate and entertain the children sometimes back. However, this has changed to promotion of harmful activities and behaviors. These are usually harmful to the life of many young people or teenagers. There is need to control the behavior and the time the kids take to watch television. Parents should go ahead to provide parental guidance to the programs the children watch or view. This is because TV has become even more harmful to children or teens. There is need to control or limit that which the children watching in order to enhance and improve their skills. It is also important to encourage them to do things that are of importance to them and which are active in nature. It is also important to encourage them to involve themselves with active activities rather than passive ones which may lead t deterioration of their health (Walter, 1999). According to Science Daily (2009), there is need for the government to control the programs being viewed in the televisions. This can be done through fixation of tough measures against those televisions. Government has a great role towards protecting the children against the erosion of their behaviors by the media. Tough measures should be taken on those televisions stations that air bad program that are not up to required standards. There is also need to control the movies that are filmed especially to the teenagers as they also contribute greatly to their behaviors. All this can be done by reviewing the media bills that guide the media houses. There is need to do more research on the effect of the television on the children and also come up with ways in which television can be programmed so as to air important programs to the viewers and those that are of importance to them. People should also be encourage on doing more active activities rather than depending on television as their only option of relaxing. This is very harmful and dangerous due to the psychological effects that they bring around an end result. Television effects do not affect children only, but they also affect adults in their thinking perspectives. They should also try and avoid television in most of their times so as to promote healthy development as well as physical development as well. Although television was mainly meant to provide education and entertainment, this has changed greatly in the present days to it being even more harmful to the whole society. Therefore, there is need to undertake all measures need to avoid those effects from becoming more harmful. References All-Free-Essays. (2010). Television Does More Harm Than Good.
