Organisation Behaviour and Design Lecturer: Organisation Behavior and Design Q. I The main issue or the problem inthe case study is poor leadership in the company and this problem began when Peter Meyers took over as CEO from his father. The leadership problem in the company resulted due to peter’s inability or failure to influence, motivate and enable other employees to contribute towards the effectiveness of the company. Daft (2010) argues that leadership is the ability to influence, motivate, engage followers in decision making and communicate effectively across the organisation structure.

This is vital because it can contribute to effective organizational performance; thus enabling the company to become profitable and achieve their stated objectives successfully. However, Peter Meyers did contrary to what it makes a successful leader, a reason that contributed to the poor organisational performance, which eventually led to the closure of the company. He failed to motivate workers and never involved other leaders or employees in decision-making process especially in the introduction of brand new range of confectionery and other related products something that later led to organisational problems. Q. 2 One of the sub-issues that merged in this case is the workplace conflicts among the top leaders and workers.

Conflicts in the workplace at time cause devastating effects on management and workforce; thereby, contributing to poor organisational performance. Poor communication in the company contributed to conflicting issues among the top leaders and the resentment among the employees grew; thus forcing other employees to join labour unions while others filed for lawsuit cases. Secondly, work stress is another issue that arose after the company started experiencing problems such as low profits, high cost of inputs, equipment maintenance issues and low consumption for the brand products.

The work stress issue is relevant to the case because many employees became discontented with their job due to varied work related concerns. Thirdly, downsizing and layoffs of employees is another issue that arose in the company. This is relevant to the case because after the economic downturn, Peter Meyers reacted by slashing employees to 40 precent and provided employees with unfair dismissals. Lastly, lack of motivation and this is relevant to the case because employees could no longer receive employee benefits.

For instance, Christmas bonuses, parties, and many the strategic errors committed by Peter Meyers frustrated many employees, as well as, killed their morale of working hard. Q. 3 One of the theories that can be applied in this case is Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy Theory and this helps one to understand the issue of motivation. This theory remains valid in the contemporary business world in understanding the significant of motivating human beings, personal development and management training at the workplace.

The ideas of Maslow are concerned with motivational needs and this is through offering a workplace environment that enables workforce to recognize their unique potential; hence building a successive working team. Secondly, conflict management theory which is related to the issue of conflict in the workplace. The effective approach to conflict resolution is through improving communication and reducing interdependencies in an organisation (Daft, 2010). Thirdly, emotional intelligence model is another strategic approach or theory that is relevant to the stress issue.

Being aware of yourself and others is vital because it can contribute to work related attitudes such as increased job satisfaction, job involvement and organisational commitment. Therefore, work related attitudes can influence a company’s profitability indirectly through customer loyalty and satisfaction, as well as, contribute to a high service quality. This theory argues that effective leaders can ensure labour force who performs well receives more valued rewards than those who perform poorly, thus motivating others to become competitive. Q. 4 The solution to this case could be executed through implementing an effective plan that could enable the company to arrive to the final decision vital for enabling them to achieve success.

First, assessing or reviewing the situation and this is vital because it can offer one a basis for effective planning. Situation assessment can enable one to gather adequate information that can help him or her to develop an improved plan for tackling organizational issues. Second, planning for the success and this involves taking a broader analysis of the issue and this requires use of team approach. A successful leader is the one who engages team in decision-making process and builds a culture of respects among workforces.

In the planning stage, it is crucial to set goals or objectives and prioritise actions necessary for making advanced strategies happen. Thirdly, implementing the plan by focusing on solutions instead of problems is also vital. Focusing on solutions is vital because it offers particular techniques and effective communication strategies when developing a workplace plan, which offer a framework for resolving the existing problems. Lastly, evaluating the outcome by taking the necessary actions and this involves advising participants.
