Smoking cessation therapy during pregnancy Summary Cressman Alex, Pupco Anna, Kim Eunji, Koren Gideon and Bozzo Pinna ed the article, ‘Smoking cessation therapy during pregnancy’ that Canadian Family Physician published in May 2012. The authors recognized motivation among patients to stop smoking despite challenge that the patients still face. Smoking contains many toxins and caseinogens that affect women’s reproductive system but many therapies have been developed that promises efficiency in achieving smoking cessation.

Nicotine Replacement therapy is one of the alternatives and reduces exposure to smoke toxins as well as eliminating withdrawal symptoms. The therapy also improves safety during pregnancy, ensures fair birth weight, and reduces mortality and admissions in intensive care units. Bupropion is another therapy, is effective in aiding cessation, and has no significant adverse effects on mothers and their fetuses. Another therapy is Varenicline that helps in managing withdrawal symptoms and desire to smoke.

It is effective in smoking cessation for non-pregnant women but limited data exist on its effectiveness on pregnant women. Analysis The information is important in improving women’s health during pregnancy and the health of their fetuses by providing a solution to the smoking problem among the women. This help benefits is universally applicable with respect to time and location. Other researchers such Colin, Gillian, and Cheryl contradict the article’s finding on effectiveness of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (47- 50).

Gaither et. al. also noted that the therapy has significant effects on reducing birth rates (499). Reflection Even though the article is informative and promises improved health for women smokers and their fetuses, its findings are inconsistent with findings of studies that were conducted before and after it. Further research can however be conducted ascertain its validity. I learnt of the need to countercheck information from different literatures to ascertain validity before using such information.
