of the of the of the The discussion aims at examining the studies conducted by researchers on gestational diabetes among Hispanic women in Los Angeles County. For this purpose, two research articles have been chosen. The first research was conducted by Buchanan, et al (1993) on 303 women suffering from gestational diabetes by assessing normal glucose level and tolerance level. The other research was conducted by Baraban, et al (1991-2003) using hospital discharge data of women aged 15-54 suffering from gestational diabetes.

This research used multivariate regression analysis to identify the prevalence of gestational diabetes. Both these researches highlighted the fact that gestational diabetes has been increasing at a rapid pace in Los Angeles County among Hispanic women.Gestational Diabetes among Hispanic WomenThe research conducted by Buchanan, et al (1993) on 303 women suffering from gestational diabetes showed that 59 women completed randomized trial of diet therapy and diet plus regular insulin. The research showed that diet and diet plus insulin groups were well matched and prevented maternal capillary.

The research also showed that the lack of insulin therapy aggravated the cases of gestational diabetes while the insulin treatment helped in reducing the level of gestational diabetes to an extent. On the other hand, the research conducted by Baraban, et al (1993-2001) used hospital discharge data to identify women aged 15-54 belonging to Los Angeles County and had single delivery in the period 1991-2003 along with signs of gestational diabetes. The results showed an increase of gestational diabetes from 14.

5 cases per thousand in 1991 to 47.5 cases per thousand in 2003. The results were identified trough multivariate regression analysis where the annual rate for gestational diabetes was 9.9% in Hispanic women and can be considered as quite large compared to the overall increase in the gestational diabetes at 8.3%.MethodsThe research conducted by Baraban, et al (1991-2003) calculated the age distributed prevalence rate for each year along with identifying women with gestational diabetes. The statistical tool used in the study was SAS Statistical Package Version 10.0. While the research conducted by Buchanan, et al (1993) used the sample size of 303 women belonging to Los Angeles County.

The statistical tool used in the research was SPSS Software Version 8.0.MeasuresThe research conducted by Baraban, et al (1991-2003) used the regression model to ascertain the age, gestational year and ethnicity while separate models using multivariate analysis were run to identify the impact of gestational diabetes among different races. On the other hand, research conducted by Buchanan, et al (1993) used mean and standard deviation for age and gestational years while Anova analysis was conducted for the analysis of variance like glucose level in order to detect its relationship with the diet and insulin therapy.

ResultsResearch conducted by Buchanan, et al (1993) clearly stated that insulin therapy does play an important role in lowering the risk of gestational diabetes while the research conducted by Baraban, et al (1991-2003) clearly stated that the cases of gestational diabetes have been increasing at a rapid pace in the Los Angeles County largely because of the increase in hypertension and other factors like improper diet and medication.ConclusionOn the basis of the analysis of above discussed researches, it can be said that gestational diabetes has been increasing at a rapid pace and requires proper diet and insulin therapy to nullify its impact to an extent.

This will help in dealing with the issue of gestational diabetes in an effective way.ReferencesBaraban, E; McCoy, L; Simon, P; (1991-2003) Increasing Prevalence of Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy-Related Hypertension in Los Angeles County, California, 1991–2003.
