As the report declares sex discrimination in the work place is still an issue despite the enactment of laws that aim to preclude it. Sex discrimination exists for several reasons, including the lack of or inability to establish human resource management practices that promote fair employment practices;  allowing gender stereotypes to affect company decisions regarding staffing and evaluation; and changes in the way the judicial system interprets sex discrimination. The present study aims to determine the perceptions of discrimination by minority nurses in New Zealand.

In particular, it aims to describe male nurses’ perceived discrimination in New Zealand; and to recommend pragmatic ways of alleviating this social ill in New Zealand healthcare work settings. The study shall make use of a descriptive-correlational research design. It is descriptive since it aims to depict the levels of personal rejection and unfair treatment of male nurses, which are the subscales used to define discrimination. These subscales have been adapted from Barnes et al’s typology which deals with discrimination based on race; although the items were self-constructed.

Moreover, it is likewise correlational because there is an intent to determine relationships between unfair treatment and personal rejection on one hand, and overall satisfaction of the male nurse, on the other. The current study is also cross-sectional because it is conducted only at one point in time rather than carrying it out over a long period of time, i.e. longitudinal.
