Extract of sample "One Dead in Attic by Chris Rose"

When, he says, “They just don’t get it,” Chris Rose refers to the lack of understanding by the rest of Americans on what Mardi Gras is all about. He calls the rest of Americans, “Great elsewhere”. These people are unaware of what Mardi Gras means to the people of New Orleans. The rest of America, which includes Non-New Orleans politicians, Media houses and even the average American people criticize the residents of New Orleans for holding Mardi Gras after the devastating Hurricane Katrina.

The “Great Elsewhere” perceives Hurricane Katrina as being an exposition full of drunkards and immorality. He claims that most of the people who kill the real values of Mardi Gras are tourists from the rest of the US, who throng the city during the carnival (Rose 220).Chris Rose insists that even after the people of New Orleans died from the Hurricane, New Orleans is not dead. By not holding Mardi Gras, it will be synonymous with saying that New Orleans is dead. He defends the New Orleans culture and insists that the people of New Orleans had decided to hold Mardi Gras with or without the approval of the rest of the world.

Mardi Gras, according to Chris Rose is about having fun and it happens before the parade. He claims that the real Mardi Gras takes place in bars and restaurants where people take time to have fun. Mardi Gras in New Orleans culture defines the love of life, the values of a harmonic assembly of New Orleans food, music, creativity, unconventional behavior, environs, and the joy of existence (Rose 223).
