Routing protocols define the methodology by which the routers on the network guide a packet along the path to the destination through the most appropriate route. The routers deployed on the network know about these routes through their native routing tables comprising of two types of routing information – static routes and dynamic routes. Static routing entries are entered by the network administrator with the help of appropriate commands of the router. These entries are permanently recorded in the routing tables and are changed only by the network administrator.

Dynamic routing entries are controlled by dynamic routing protocols. Dynamic Routing protocols are of two types – Distance Vector Routing Protocol and Link State Routing Protocol. The routing mechanism in both the dynamic routing protocols is based on detection of the lowest cost of the path to a destination (best path criteria), however, what differs between them is the criteria for choosing the lowest-cost path.Distance Vector Routing Protocol: This protocol decides the cost of reaching a destination based on the number of hops to the destination (i.e., the number of IP hosts traversed to reach the destination).

The most common Distance Vector Routing Protocols are IP RIP version 2 (this is more popular compared to the original RIP as some limitations have been removed) and Cisco IGRP. The exchange of information in routing tables in RIP/IGRP is carried out by a broadcast sent by all routers to all other routers on the network.Link State Routing Protocol: This protocol calculates the metrics against each link by tracking the parameters like link type, speed & current utilization level whereby some of the parameters are default and the others are defined by the network administrator.

The most common Link state routing protocols are OSPF and Cisco EIGRP. The exchange of information in routing tables in OSPF/EIGRP occurs by communication over multicasts or between neighbors whereby only the updates are sent out and not the entire routing table.

Critical Analysis on Route Reservation in Ad Hoc Networks

Various extensions to RSVP are currently being standardized, while many other reservation protocols have also been proposed.... In most of the previous reservation protocols, a connection has to be fully established before the transmission of any data packet can start.... A problem with such protocols in future broadband networks is that the round-trip or one-way propagation delay required for establishing a connection is non-negligible compared to the time required to transmit the data, which leads to low link utilization since the required capacity is reserved long be-fore it is actually used, considerably affecting the maximum achievable throughput (Fig....
