THE EFFECT OF PHYSICAL APPEARANCE ON WAGES ONCE ABILITY/INTELLIGENCE IS PROVEN The present study aims to explore the relationship between physical appearance and mental intellect of the employees and workers on the one hand, and determination and growth of their salaries and wages on the other. The research is interested in investigate the influence of both the above-mentioned qualities of the workers on their professional growth. Since salary-packages serve as the significant criteria for measuring the status and professional growth of the employees, wages and salaries have been taken as the dependent variable for the present study. The research affirms the very reality that though every entrepreneur is influenced by physical beauty of the employees in one way or the other, yet appearance is not the only factor in the determination of salary or climbing up of the career ladder. Introduction: Individuals in every society are involved into one economic activity or the other in order to earn bread for themselves and their families, as well as for leading a happy, prosperous and respectable life. Essentially, institutions are durable systems of established and embedded social rules and conventions that structure social interactions. (Hodgson 2001: 295) Economic institutions are the persistent groups of norms of behavior which serve collectively valued purposes; or in narrow sense of, a set of rules to facilitate co-ordination via allowing expectations to form.’(Nabli & Nugent 1989) An overwhelming majority of every social set up applies against divergent posts and positions at various organizations after obtaining formal education or technical skills. Consequently, the entrepreneurs recruit these individuals for the development of their business activities and profit volume. While recruiting and promoting the employees for their organizations, and determining their salaries and wages, the entrepreneurs take many factors into consideration. Not only men are the lovers of beauty, but also the institutions and organizations seek beauty of both countenance and refinement of mind in everyday activities, professional performances and domestic chores as well. The companies give special attention to decorum and choose such persons in their team, which can influence upon their clients and customers at first sight on the one hand, and can render exceptional performances out of their intellect and skills on the other. It is therefore hiring of pleasing and efficient personalities is an imperative matter for the corporate firms and organizations. It is particularly applied to the fresh graduates entering the organizations for job seeking on the one hand, and the professionals already working at various positions. Employers are, Armour (2005) submits, free to be unfair other than some protected classes; there isnt a great deal employees can do about it. We saw it first on the playground, when the popular people who were the leaders chose other people like them as friends. Looking good on the job is an intangible asset that can be important, just as sharp technology skills or the ability to be a team player can give certain workers an edge. (Retrieved from US Today) Thus, result-oriented personnel are the most wanted and highly popular stratum for the reputed organizations. Sociological Significance: Job is a social phenomenon that creates employer-employee relationship between two or more individuals. There are many types of jobs including labor, private, semi-government, governmental and daily wages etc. Recruitment, wages-determination and promotion are essential parts of job experienced by every employee during his working in an organization. Statistics show that over 80% of the total world population is affiliated with some sort of job at local, national and international level. So, the topic maintains great sociological significance in its wide scope. In addition, extra wages, out of turn promotion and allocation of individuals at some distinguished position, higher than one’s experience and caliber, are most debatable issues at organizational scale, which makes the study highly imperative one. Aims & Objectives: The aims and objectives of the present study include: To estimate the patterns of recruitment, salary settlement and promotion introduced by different organisations To find out strategies adopted by the corporations to ensure increase in business volume To discover whether or not physical appearance has left a positive impact on the business volume of an industry To explore whether or not extraordinary intellect, outstanding performance and skills of employees can surpass physical appearance of the employees To provide a comprehensive research proposal in an effective way so that an imperative research could be conducted on the basis of this proposal. Review of Relevant Literature: Nutt (2006) has conducted his research on the topic of relation between physical appearance and daily life activities under the title “The Impact of Your Physical Appearance on Your Daily Life”, and proved the very reality that physical appearance leaves strong impact on daily life of individuals. But she does not see eye to eye with the notion that mere beautiful countenance is sufficient enough to win the hearts of others. On the contrary, she views that a person having exceptional qualities and paying due heed to his work can win applause from all corners. In addition, she opines that spending too much hours on one’s dressing and appearance though may capture the attention of others, yet it wastes lots of time and energy in non-productive activity. In addition, it may deviate the people from displaying their talent and skills before the management, colleagues and co-workers. You will have, Nutt (2006) submits, a harder time attracting mates because you wont have the confidence to project your qualities out to the world. You will be shy about approaching members of the opposite sex, because youve already defeated yourself in your own mind. Weed (1960) conducted his study on the significance of beauty, and declared it as the combination of both mental and physical comeliness. A person is beautiful, in the Weed’s eyes, provided he bestows emotional and mental favors upon his fellow-beings. He is of the view that in order to get complete comprehension of the meanings of beauty, one must acknowledge his contributions towards his family, organization and society at large. Beauty must, Weed notes, be brought into manifestation not only on the physical level but in the emotional and mental world as well. There is no denying that a great deal of progress has already been made towards eliminating ugliness in the physical world about us and replacing it beauty. The individuals clear to their work description and objectives can impress the management during recruitment interviews, and prove their skill and talent after becoming the part of the organization. On the contrary, sometimes very graceful, proficient and gifted candidates cannot win the hearts of the interviewers. Hence, high level of confidence and proper display of one’s capabilities serve as the vital points for career growth. It is imperative that you state your objectives clearly. Most organizations are looking for people who take action and will engage in helping the organization move forward. Your organization will first see your potential for such behavior in the hiring stages. (Quoted in articlesbase.com) Wen (2001) declares lack of the employees’ vision and exposure as one of the greatest hurdles on the way to their progress in professional life. He is of the view that the young people wrongly take their appearance as the only source of obtaining rapid promotions and high salaries and do not lay stress upon displaying their abilities in performance, which is quite hazardous as appearance is less important for a result-oriented and farsighted entrepreneurship. He states the Chinese professionals as comparatively more prudent and rationale, as they make hard work and dedication to their career as the only source of achieving success in professional life. The lack of mature professionals in many sectors, Wen (2001: 3) observes, the flood of companies entering China, the need of companies to hire and retain talent, and the ambitions of top Chinese talent are all factors that contribute to the battlefield promotion phenomenon. Compared to their peers in mature markets, Chinese executives rise through the ranks much faster, in terms of both title and job scope. They spend shorter periods in a given position than their counterparts overseas before moving up, either with their firm or outside it. It is the broad exposure of the Chinese that has turned their nation into the economic and strategic giant of the world. Research Methodology: Operationalisation of Concepts and Variables: Hypothesis: The research suggests the following hypothesis for the conducting of the present study: The more proficient and brilliant a professional is, the more the probability of his obtaining attractive salary and promotion while working in a reputed organization The main hypothesis has been supported by the two following sub-hypotheses: The more hardworking and committed a professional is to his organization, the more the chances of winning applause from his superiors within the corporate environment The more the talent and skill a professional displays, the brighter the prospects of climbing his career ladder swiftly Concepts: The concepts involved in the present research include: Concepts related to the Independent Variable: i. Proficiency and Brilliance: Proficiency refers to the ability and expertise a man has been gifted, with the help of which he proves himself as a useful member of society. In the present study, proficiency and brilliance stand for the professional talent and skilled exercised by the personnel while rendering their services at an organization. ii. Pleasing: The term pleasing simply means a personality, idea, talent, panorama or view that makes heart happy and delightful. A pleasing objective may either be apparent or latent or both. For example, dexterity on some specific skill or area is a pleasing intellectual talent, which could be expressed through words, writing, painting and performing. iii. Personality: Personality refers to the combination of refined and coarse traits as well as evident and hidden characteristics an individual contains in him. Personality is, according to the renowned psychologist Carl Jung, the supreme realization of the innate idiosyncrasy of a living being. It is an act of high courage flung in the face of life, the absolute affirmation of all that constitutes the individual, the most successful adaptation to the universal condition of existence coupled with the greatest possible freedom for self-determination. (1934: 31) iv. Professional: The term professional points out to the individuals having affiliations with some particular career, profession or occupation on the basis of his education, aptitude, qualification, proficiency and expertise. Lawyers, teachers, doctors, engineers and others come under the definition of a professional. v. Talent and skill: Talent and skill focus on the command, efficiency, specialty and competence that distinguish individuals from their competitors, rivals and other people of society in professional field. Concepts related to the Dependent Variable: vi. Organization: An organization is the group of people gathered formally in order to perform the obligations they share as the member of the organization for the accomplishment of some task or for the achievement of some goal or destination. Here the term organization simply means the work place that is established for some economic purposes and financial gains, and offers remuneration against the services of the managers, employees and workers. vii. Corporate Environment: Corporate environment means the atmosphere or region where activities related to business, trade and commerce are exercised and conducted. Commercial area and surroundings are also included in it. viii. Wages and salaries: Wages and salaries refer to the remunerations offered by the corporate firms against the services of the workers as compensation. The companies hire the staff members and employees for the fulfillment of one task or the other and offer specific wages and pays to their workers. Usually the wages and pays are in the form or money, though facilities, allowances and rewards are also the part of compensation the employees receive from the owners, industrialists or employers according to the prescribed mode described in the employees’ contract with employers. ix. Career Ladder: Career ladder refers to the journey of a professional towards height of career with the passage of time. Some of the professionals speedily climb the career ladder and obtain rapid promotions and salary increase, while some of them get only few promotions as well as little salary increase throughout their career. x. Workers and employees: Workers, staff members and employees are the most important stratum of an organization, which work under the command of the owners according to the policies announced by the owners and receive wages, pays, salaries and other compensation against their services, works and performances rendered for the organization. Employees serve as the identity of an organization, and their behavior and service determine the level of the organization. The workforce plays most dominant part in the growth, stability and progress of an organization. RESEARCH PROCEDURE Universe: The present research aims to be conducted on corporate sector of New York City, where the directors, managers, employers, employees and workers would be the units of analysis for the present study. Sampling: The researcher aims to apply quota (non-probability) sampling for the current study. Twenty owners and directors would be selected from both the sexes as respondents from the employer section; and twenty managers and executives each (forty in total) would be selected from employees stratum of society from both the genders i.e. male and female, to give equal representation to all strata of corporate sector. The researcher will personally visit the offices in the selected commercial zone of the city for the collection of data. Tools for Data Collection: The researcher will utilize interview-schedule as the tool to collect answers from the units of analysis for the present study, and will personally interview all the employers and employees during the research process. Interview-schedule consisted of three sections and forty-five questions. Section 1 aims to enquire about age, sex, job/business nature and corporate status of the respondents, which will carry nine questions. Section 2 will be developed to enquire about the recruitment and promotion procedure experienced by the respondents. In addition, this section will also enquire the wages structure prevailing in the work place of the respondents, and will carry seventeen questions. Last section focuses upon the nature of the respondents’ satisfaction and dissatisfaction on recruitment, promotion and wages structure, and their recommendations and suggestions regarding alterations in these procedures.
