The nursing profession presents some practice challenges such as high stress due to long periods of work. As a result, there is a high probability of compromised patients care. Health care leaders and practitioners in work and academic setting concur that the new nursing graduates who are joining the practice need proper developmental nurturing. This means that nursing professional graduates require prior developmental training upon the start of their practice. This is because, early nursing practice among the graduates presents difficulties and yet complex fast-paced working environments characterised by many challenges (Theressa, 2012). Seemingly, new nurses require proper competencies and knowledge rather than those acquired in schools in order to carry out their duties professionally. This is because their college training gives them theoretical knowledge, but fails to instil situational and clinical experience essential for application in the real life situations. Subsequently, majority of the new nurses require situational experiences and long term nurturing so that they can be able to manage their clinical judgement, intuition, as well as contextual expertise in care delivery and overall nursing practice at large. This paper will give my personal comprehensive plan that would support my own growth as a contemplative practitioner within the first initial six months of my practice. First, the paper will exemplify on my own professional development. Secondly, it will address various strategies to work with others. Finally, it will highlight the frameworks of autonomy, accountability, and practice.
Personal Professional Development
This secret document will guide and help keep a record of my daily professional activities. This is important since it will enable achievement of my employer’s expectations as well as fundamental standards of practice. Coming up with this plan is a clear sign to both my organization and the public that I am committed to maintaining the competence to professional growth and practice duty critically. Professional development plan is a crucial component of self-regulation in a nursing practice (Crnbc 2014). Coming up with a professional development plan requires informed self-evaluation processes as well as equal resubmit (Crnbc 2014). This is the initial stage at which the identification of the crucial aspects to be included in the plan is made (RNA, 2011). First, I will assess my ability to deliver organizational expectations and the set standards by completing my-self made evaluation questionnaire. I will then proceed to include my surgical nursing development plan. This will involve self-assessment, learning activities and evaluation.
Self-Assessment
This step will involve appraisal of my nursing professional practice as pertains to the set protocols of the practice. After the self-assessment, I will then proceed to the planning phase of the things that I will need to learn to lay a strong framework for an excellent nursing professional practice. I will write down the things I need to learn and lay a great emphasis on the need of studying each of them. For example, I will write the things that I will need to learn this year until the end. By the end of June 2014, I will need to have a clear knowledge on various principles that concern oncology and theatre nursing. Moreover, I should have learnt how to advocate for patients suffering cancer and learnt how to offer proper in-service training and development to my workmates. I will then develop strategies on how I will learn new things. I will focus on both formal and informal learning activities. Formal learning will involve versatile training such as taking of courses and attending workshops. Non-formal learning will involve collection of information through literature review, clients, colleagues, the internet, as well as forums that are related to health issues. Evaluation will involve reassessing whether I was able to meet all the items listed in my development plan. In my evaluation plan, I will assess if I attained the goals of understanding oncology and theatre nursing principles.
In creating my personal development plan, I will reflect on my self-assessment and peer feedback plan (Healthworkforce, 2013). Consequently, I will ask myself

In addition, I will focus on various ways through which I will be able to attain my learning goals and needs by regularly reviewing my plan to evaluate my progress as well as the necessity to alter my goals.
The next stage of my professional development plan will be to Set SMART Goals that will enable me to construct my goals.
Specific — this will focus on the specific things that I will do in order to achieve my goals. These will include review of various case studies in nursing, attendance of workshops, conferences, arrangement of forums with my workmates to discuss matters in the workplace by the end of June 2013.
Measurable — to measure my success I will first evaluate myself since the starting month of work until the commencement of the sixth month. I will focus on changes to personal practice development, adherence to realizing pain management protocols, being a resource person to my counter-parts.
Attainable— I will ask myself if everything that is doing is achievable.
Realistic — I will focus on the things that I will find important to do at that stage of my career practice. I will ignore the unrealistic goals. For example, it will be hectic to change entire ward practices within a period of six months.
Time bound — this goal will set the period through which I will attain my objectives. I plan by the end of June 2013 to review at least two scholar articles in nursing.
Strategies to Work with Others
Developing strategies to work with others requires various set principles (Nswdepartmentofhealth, 2014). This includes a clear vision, determination of roles, effective communication with workmates, effective decision-making, balanced participation, strategies to manage conflicts as well as create cooperative relationships. Being a professional nurse in surgical, I will first lay a clear vision of the goals that I need to attain. Working with a set vision will not only motivate me but will also create a suitable working environment free from conflicts with my counterparts. The next strategy is to determine my working roles. Here, I will define my job line through development of a concise plan of my shifts to work and my duties. Through this strategy, I will avoid wrangles with my colleagues. Open and clear communication with my workmates is also another crucial strategy of establishing healthy work relationship with my colleagues. I will work towards attainment of this goal by establishing effective communication strategies such as good listening skills and provision of effective and well-thought feedback. More importantly, I will lay a great emphasis on valued diversity among the team members. Through this strategy, I will appreciate the efforts as well as the levels of experiences of every single colleague. Good conflicts management is also essential strategy of working with others. This is because it ensures amicable solution for every disagreement that may arise while in the workplace. Cooperative relationship is also essential as it create willingness to work and create a sense of belonging between the workmates and I. Finally, I will engage myself in participative leadership. This will be of importance to my professional as it will not only nurture my leadership skills but will also share responsibilities while working with others.
Frameworks of Autonomy, Accountability, and Practice
Autonomy
In nursing, autonomy is a crucial concept that focuses on professional abilities of a trained nurse in making precise, reliable, and informed decisions independently while in practice. Autonomy is integral to accountability and is essential in health care practice (Skar, 2010). Possession of the ability to make informed decisions based on professional knowledge is vital especially during medical emergencies. Therefore, this is a vital framework of every nursing professional. In addition, clear understanding autonomy in nursing profession is important in the current changing trends in health care since it promotes development of nursing expertise. As a graduate nurse, I will be autonomous in my practice in order to deliver quality care.
Accountability
Accountability is a crucial framework for every nursing professional (Royalcollegeofnursing, 2012). All nurses are accountable of planning, assessment, as well as evaluation of standards and protocols of quality care to patients. As a professional, I am accountable of my actions. Therefore, I possess accountabilities of social, legal, contractual, as well as ethical accountabilities. This means I am responsible for every task I undertake no matter how simple or small it may look like. Consequently, I am advised not to perform any action beyond my level of competence. Accountability in nursing also includes participatory routines that show the commitment behaviours that promote quality standards of care among the nursing professionals.
Practice
Practice is a fundamental framework of every nursing professional. Effective practice requires every nurse to be autonomous and accountable for his/her actions. Good professional practice demands every nurse to make effective and precise professional judgement (NMC, 2013). This encompasses employment of control principles and justification of a professional decision. For best and reliable practice, nurses must learn to make decisions that are based on skills, experience, and professional knowledge. Nurses should also learn effective communication between them and their group leaders and be able to raise concerns when needed.
Conclusion
In meeting the expectations of my professional development plan, I need to have discipline and adherence to the various strategies of working with others. Moreover, I need to keep in mind the frameworks of accountability, autonomy, and practice all the time. This will be essential in helping me achieve the goals of my professional development plan within the first six months in the nursing profession induction program.
